A man persecuted. All in the name of Art.

So Sydney is currently ridden with an art controversy, and for you art lovers- you should all be in the know. Of course I'm talking about Bill Henson. Bill Henson is an Australian contemporary photographic artist and his latest exhibition at the Sydney Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery was canceled due to the nature of his subjects- his art depicted naked adolescents. This theme led to a complaint, police investigations and what-have-yous.

To truly understand everything, you would need to understand the foundations of Henson's work. His art is concerned with contrasts, juxtaposition and relationships. TheMaleBeauty noted the work (in it entirety) as a:
"meditation on the categories and relationships of male and female; youth and adulthood; day and night; light and dark; nature and civilization. Henson's intention is to use photography for creative expression. He states that he is not interested in a political or sociological agenda... (he) is not intending his photographs to be authoritative evidence but rather to suggest endless possibilities and cause people to wonder."
This is true of his canceled exhibition, which reflects the transition from childhood to adolescence. To me, the nudity is symbolic of who the child/teen really is- devoid of social class, background and all the other superficialities that society holds dear.
Henson who have been photographing "young nude junkies" and "teenage nudes" as far back as 1983 used to raise no eyebrows, there was no persecution- I mean, critics saw his work as "obvious", not scandalous! What's changed now?

Nudity in art and pornography simply should not be confused- one is for creative expression and the other is for sexual gratification. For the Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to label it as "revolting"- I am left speechless and disappointed. The comment by the artist Martin Sharp sums it all up rather well
"It was a powerful image. I would call it very beautiful in its vulnerability rather than 'revolting' as the Prime Minister has done," Sharp said. The photograph suggested the girl "gave her trust to Henson … and this trust has been violated by the police and Kevin Rudd's comments."
I will, however, acknowledge the current impasse. Should the government lay criminal charges on the man? Even lawyers have recognized the futility of such an act because "The Crimes Act requires two things - an intention and an act, the act is usually fairly easily established but if the intention is to produce a work of art and solely to produce a work of art, then I can not see how a crime has been committed" (read: Henson can easily find witnesses to prove his work as art). Henson's ex-models, even those who are now parents, had nothing against him- "His work is sublime and only a warped mind could associate it with such crassness" (not to mention he had full consent from all of them). The mother of the art-interested 13yo girl at the center of the controversy tells that they are "very strong supporters of Bill Henson and his works". But for the gov to let him go unscathed would most likely cause some certain strong reactions of the general public- not to mention Mr. Rudd. So what are they going to do?(This above photo is one of his older works)
So you've heard my (rather strong) stance on this topic. I think I've written enough. I want to hear your opinions!
Edit: This sounds a bit silly- but thank you idiot for correcting my mistake! I got the picture from facebook and it seems they've got it wrong! I've changed it now...

off to DC for the weekend!

Paul and I are heading to DC for a weekend getaway! I'll be back Tuesday! I haven't been back to my old neighborhood (Dupont Circle) in about 10 + years so I can't wait to see and remember my college years. I am feeling very nostalgic for college lately. We'll also get to have dinner with Lesley and her husband. Can't wait for that!

We're staying at a B&B that we stayed at in 1998. Last time we had a bad experience (very bad!), but due to round about circumstances beyond our control we are staying there again. I am already prepared for the no TVs in the rooms. Why do B&Bs insist on no TVs? The big question is will the Tabard Inn surprise us and leave us with the rave reviews that everyone else has about the place? We'll find out!!

I'll be twittering from the road! Follow my twitters in my blog side bar or go here to read my updates!

See you Tuesday!

Diorphone

Move aside Prada phone! What Dolce razr? Bye bye iphone! I want a Diorphone!
It looks phenomenal, comes out next month in selected Dior boutiques and I'll go so far to say its a 2-for-1 deal! You get the true sized phone and a mini phone! The mini is there so you don't have to rummage around the black crevasse of a huge leather bag that we are all so fond of (myself included)!
edit: just to clarify, the mini phone is a little thing for you to take calls (and answer calls only, I presume). My guess is that it'll probably be connected via bluetooth with your true phone.

There are, however, slight (or major) concerns- depending on how you look at it. One is the price- I'm reluctant to fork out 3500 euros for a phone. Another is that since this is Dior's first technological product, I have a feeling it will contain bugs, phone lag and its own set of problems. But the colors and the flip design instantly makes me associate it with trendy Japanese flip phones which are to die for! Looks aside, I guess I'll find out- in time- how efficient this Dior darling operates as reviews come out on various websites!

Anyone else with me?

I'm getting sad that the Gossip Girl Season 1 finale is next week! S1 went by in a flash and now I've got to wait until late 2008 before Season 2 comes out! Episode 18 is going to be smashing- a nice big end with a bang!

PS I try and I try to update frequently but it's hard you know. My terrible internet connection is going to be the death of me.

I love how this one came out with the windmill and the plains behind them. It was fun to work on! Just finished two more custom orders this weekend, will post them when they are all done!

do you post your family photos online? read this!

There are two bills that are coming up in the House and Senate that will change copyright as we know it.

They were shot down once before because of action against it --- but now they are back as bill numbers H.R. 5889 The Orphan Works Act of 2008 and S 2913 The Shawn Bentley Orphan Works Act of 2008

If you post your family photos on Flickr, anywhere on the internet or on your blog read on!

Could you imagine if someone used your child's photo in an unsavory advertisement and you had no say and no rights to make them stop using it! This could easily happen if these bills are passed. There has already been an instance of Virgin Mobile using unauthorized Flickr photos of children in advertisements & billboards and that is before this law was proposed. We do not need to make it easier for them to steal your family photos!

If you are posting your photos online, you should read below and then send a letter (there is an EASY fill out form on the Illustrator Partnership web site all you do is enter your info and press send!)Takes 1 minute!!!

This is NOT a hoax. This is FOR REAL. And it is scary. Some people say us illustrators and designers are being alarmist, but I would rather err on the side of caution, defeat this bill and keep my copyrights as they are now. These bills were shot down once because of strong resistance from Illustrators, designers and photographers we can defeat these bills again!

This is text from the Illustrator Partnership web site:
Due to the lack of publicity about this bill, the most innocent victims of this plunder – those who put images online - are still completely unaware of it. Who am I talking about? Average American families who have enjoyed the internet as a way to share the happiest, and even saddest, moments of their lives with their friends and family across the country, and even around the world, through the wonders of technology. Google has already said they plan to use these orphan works in the millions. Why should companies like this be allowed to to harvest our property from private web pages, blog sites, share sites and the like?

On all my illustration and licensing boards we have been talking about it for weeks but now the day of reckoning is almost here and not enough people know about it to help us strike it down in the Senate. We need to make our feelings heard.

If you want to protect your rights go here and send a letter. It only takes 1 minute. Here is the link. Then tell all your friends!

Thanks to everyone posting on their blogs and message boards about this important issue! Super thanks to my friend Tim Holtz for also posting and linking here. Getting the word out and getting people to send in letters is so important right now. it really only takes a minute via this widget! Time is of the essence!
thank you!!!

EDITED: Saturday at 12:50

tired out

I am worn out. With Paul's late night work schedule, it's been 4am by the time we get to bed and now it's catching up with me. I am off to see if I can get to bed before 2am. I want to watch House first though, but on DVR it's only 35 minutes. Will have to fight with Paul to see if we watch House or The Daily Show first! nighty night!

And the best superhero couple award goes to...

Zac Posen and Kate Mara.
What a POW! blue and yellow duo! Zac was definitely the Met Gala's sartorial superhero! His superpower? Brighten and lighten the slightly dull uninspiring event- it was quite disappointing to see half the guests turn up in their regular glamorous red carpet wear.

weekend's over

The weekend is over, it went too fast and I didn't get half the things done that I had on my weekend schedule --- because of all this email nonsense. I am trying not to stress about it. Taking the time to change my email was important because if people can't reach me, I can't get their work done for them!

Next weekend I am going to try to play more, but we'll see how much I get done this week! I haven't taken a weekend off in who knows how long, and I need some play time. Even my new acupuncturist brought up play time. I was like play! What's that!?

see you tomorrow!

The Copenhagen Experience

Watch and feel the mood and look of the Mads Nørgaard- Copenhagen collection. The Copenhagen Experience is his project that's going to run consectively through three of his collections- starting in SS08. His second short film came out in Feb and because Freja-Beha (as well as male model Eddie Klint and co.) is in it, there's no way I'm not blogging about this.

The SS08 video:

which I didn't like nearly as much as "The Copenhagen Experience #2" for
Nørgaard's AW08 collection, aka the "Paint it Black" collection. His current work is:
about simplicity and elegance - confronted by decadence, trying to give decadence an updated meaning. Paris in the early sixties has been important, so has London - Mary Quant, Courreges and Cardin - Bob Dylan playing electric at London Olympia in 1966 - the optimism - confronted by a touch of spleen, weltschmertz. The tone is slightly thoughtful, and at the same time sexy, shiny and elegantly optimistic.

Maybe because it's smoother (as opposed to the choppy cutting technique used in #1, but that's a matter of personal opinion I suppose) or that the pieces are more noir and black. Is it the fact that there is a stronger story behind #2 or simply because Freja gets more air time?

new email address

What a headache! I discovered today that AOL was bouncing almost all of emails. When I called tech support they told me it was my software and I needed to re-install it. How can that be!? I argued with them that it was AOL's server -- if it was only my software, the emails wouldn't bounce, they just wouldn't drop into my inbox.

They argued back. It went on for over 30 minutes it was like a game of whose on first. They kept saying it was my software, and I kept trying to explain the way the internet works and that my software has nothing to do with it.

Then they told me that whomever was emailing me must have their settings wrong in IE. I said to him "so you want me to tell everyone on the planet to change their IE settings so that they can email me?" That is the most absurd thing I have ever heard.

I have had it with AOL and now I am changing my email. To me, not getting email means I am losing business and I can't afford that. I have been meaning to do this for over a year anyway but never had the motivation until tonight!! Boy was I mad!! I still am mad! LOL!

My new email is claudine@collageartist.com! If you have my email in your address book, please update it for me! Thank you!

It's way too late. I am off to bed. It's been a stressful night!

WMFE Arts Connection clip

The segment that I taped for our local PBS Station's show called The Arts Connection just aired and is now online. My segment starts at about 7min 30sec. Click below to watch!

nighty night!

Mabel says, rub my belly and then it's time for bed!

mabel-003

Paul is on his way home from work, so I am going to call it a night, snuggle with Mabel, Toby and Stanley and watch a Top Chef episode that we DVR'd from yesterday.

Tomorrow I have my first Acupuncture appt. to try and help with migraine. Will I like it? Will I hate it? I am a bit nervous about the needles but excited to try it out and hoping it will help me.

orphan works bill

There is much hub-bub about this Orphan Works Bill that is making it's way through the House and Senate. It was shot down once before because of action against it --- but now it's back as bill numbers H.R. 5889 The Orphan Works Act of 2008 and S 2913 The Shawn Bentley Orphan Works Act of 2008

If passed it will do major damage to all of us artists, authors, illustrators, designers and photographers. Even those of us who merely post our photos on Flickr, will not be able to protect them from those who want to use them without compensation or credit.

It is scary stuff people! I have already contacted my Senators and FL Representative. And signed this petition against the bill.

This radical change to U.S. copyright law will shift the burden of diligence from infringer's to rights holders. It is wrong to give infringer's the right to make money from your property without your knowledge or consent. You should not have to pay businessmen to keep the work you’ve created.

The Orphan Works Act is an assault on national and international copyright laws. It’s an assault on the property and privacy rights embodied in them.

Illustrators, photographers, fine artists: let’s come together and act to keep Congress from orphaning our work.

Voided AdBrite Check

Hi guys, this is something that I felt that I am obligated to inform everybody. This is regarding My first AdBrite Check. As you all know, I just received the check last week. However, I am so disappointed because I need to open a dollar bank account first before that check will be deposited. I thought my EON Debit Card could accept this kind of check payment specially in U.S. currency. But, it is not.

So, immediately I inform AdBrite about this case and requested that my check will be voided. Below is the image of that check being voided.

Making Money Online

You know what? While I am experiencing my feeling of disappointments. Different thoughts and ideas are popping inside my brain which brought to a one bottom line question and that is "How come that AdBrite which is using the most modern technology online or in the internet is still adopting a 10,000 B.C. kind of payment options to its Non-U.S. Publishers?"

I am not trying to make a negative impressions here to AdBrite but you could not avoided this kind of question. Specially when you are experiencing the best payment option from Google Adsense Earnings. Right?

Anyway, I wrote last month to AdBrite and requested for a new payment options from them.

Below is the excerpt of my email to them:
Base from what Adbrite statement Non-U.S. addresses may take up to 21 business days for the check to arrive. But it is already more than a month now and my first check is not yet received by me. Hope you can help me on this sir.

And maybe you can now apply other payment options for us Non-U.S. Publishers who support Adbrite Advertising Program. I prefer PayPal or Western Union??
And below was the reply of AdBrite to me:
In regards to alternative publisher payment options such as PayPal. At this time, AdBrite offers payment by check only. The check will be mailed to the address listed on the account and issued in US dollars. When registering your account, we recommend setting your minimum check amount accordingly, as foreign banks often have fees associated with depositing checks issued in US currency. We are constantly evaluating options and services to better the marketplace experience. Any introduction of alternative payment options will be announced as we would like all AdBrite users to participate.
So, guys it is up to you now if you are going to continue to support AdBrite or not. But as for me, I rather choose an status quo until an alternative payment options will be introduced. Hope this will be realized as soon as possible. Good Luck!
