Farewell, Corazon Aquino, Asia's First Woman President

Corazon "Cory" Aquino
AKA María Corazón Sumulong Cojuangco Aquino

  • 1st Filipina President and Asia's 1st Female President (1986)
  • 1st Filipina President of the 5th Republic of the Philippines (1986)
  • 1st Filipina and 1st Woman to receive the J. William Fullbright Prize for International Understanding (1996)
  • 11th President of the Republic of the Philippines

The Associated Press Report:

"Former President Corazon Aquino, who swept away a dictator with a "people power" revolt and sustained democracy by fighting off seven coup attempts in six years, died on Saturday, her son said. She was 76.

The uprising she led in 1986 ended the repressive 20-year regime of Ferdinand Marcos and inspired nonviolent protests across the globe, including those that ended communist rule in eastern Europe. Aquino rose to power after the 1983 assassination of her husband, opposition leader Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr.

She was diagnosed with advanced colon cancer last year and confined to a Manila hospital for more than a month. Her son said the cancer had spread to other organs and she was too weak to continue chemotherapy."

Homemade Soap

Every body uses soap. In ancient days, people made their own soap. Today, we could easily buy it from the stores. There are lots of brands to choose from, and each brand has various formulations and scents.

However making your own soap has some definite advantages. We can make soap much cheaper than we can buy it. Making it for ourselves also gives us complete control over the ingredients, so we can create a soap that's perfect for our skin type in a scent or formulation of our choosing.

Homemade soap is much easier than you might think. Here's a basic recipe:

Ingredients

* 12 cups lye crystals
* 5 cups softened water
* 6 pounds lard

Instructions

1. Put water in a glass or plastic bowl. Carefully pour lye into water, stirring constantly with a plastic or wooden spoon. This should be done outdoors or in a well-ventilated area, because it produces caustic fumes.

2. Mixing lye and water produces heat. When the lye is completely dissolved, set the mixture aside to cool.

3. Place lard in a stainless steel or enamel pan. Melt over low heat.

4. Allow both the lye solution and the lard to cool to room temperature.

5. Slowly pour the lye solution into the lard, stirring slowly and constantly with the plastic or wooden spoon.

6. Continue stirring after all of the lye solution has been added. Drizzle a small amount of the mixture into the pot periodically. When the soap keeps its shape for a moment before sinking into the mixture, you can add scent, color and herbs.

7. Pour the soap into a mold greased with Crisco. Wrap in a towel, and let set for about 18 hours or until completely cooled. Uncover and let set for 12 more hours.

8. The soap may now be unmolded and cut into bars. Let the bars cure for 3 to 4 weeks before using.

Customizing Your Soap

There are lots of different ways you can customize your soap. To make the best homemade soap for your skin type, you may want to use different oils. Some that are commonly used include olive oil, coconut oil, cocoa butter and shea butter. The correct amount varies depending on which oil you use, so look for recipes online or in books until you get the hang of it.

Essential oils have therapeutic properties and add fragrance. Oatmeal, cornmeal and other grains can be added as exfoliants. And skin-safe colorants may be used to produce the desired color. These ingredients should be mixed together and added to a cup of the soap mixture, then stirred into the rest of the soap mixture immediately before pouring into the mold.

Making your own soap is easy, and it can be lots of fun. Coming up with the perfect concoction for your skin is rewarding, and sweetly scented homemade soaps make wonderful gifts for any occasion. And you can make money out of you homemade soap too.

Good Luck!

great falls!

Saturday Paul and I went with our friend Kim to Great Falls out in VA. It's hard to believe that this place is so close to where we live here in DC. It feels as if you are hundreds of miles away!

Great Falls in VA

We did a little guided tour with a Park Ranger and it was really a treat! She suggested coming back at each season to see how it changes. I imagine it's beautiful in the fall season with the leaves changing. We plan to go back and bring a little picnic!

Shake it!

You know how you create the perfect garment in your head, and then can’t find it anywhere? There might just be an answer to that! On StyleShake (http://styleshake.com/) you can create your own fashion and have it delivered to your home, for extremely good prices (for example, the blue dress would only be 34 Pounds!). You can also give up your personal measurements.

StyleShake just introduced a 100% bio-friendly jersey line. Those are stretchy materials that are made to fit and include body-con and strapless styles, balloon skirts and gorgeous Grecian drapes. I was playing around in the design studio and created this blue body-con dress, and a nude tulip skirt with a cute waistband and a grey off shoulder dress, it’s so easy!

And there is more! I had contact with Sarah Sabner from StyleShake and she told me all about the new product lines. Especially for my readers, there is a 10% discount code! Just enter the code blog10 for a 10% discount. It´s valid until the 20th of July!

Good luck with designing!

London buys

topshop skirt

the perfect skinny jeans - topshop

zara tee and COS silver pleated necklace with gold detail

h&m zip skirt

Sometimes you like an item so much, you want to have more than one. That’s what I had with my favorite white zara tee, but it was sold out everywhere, including London. Then I found one in a corner there, in the right size! Meant to be.

That pink nail polish is also my favorite, but it’s a limited ed. so it wasn’t available anymore. In London it was though! And I also bought a black version of the zip skirt from my previous post. So basically I’m just copying what I already have, hahah!
And, lucky me, I found the silver necklace in the seaming of my blazer!

ps. sorry everything’s a bit crinkled!
